Gateway to Success Academy Enrollment Begins LDN

Students will be able to start enrolling in the community’s new school, Gateway to Success Academy (G2S), beginning Monday, Feb. 15.

“We’re really excited,” said Jamie Bandstra, superintendent/principal.

The public charter school is open to all students in the sixth through 12th grades, but it is being specially designed for those who are not doing well in the traditional school environment. It will offer project-based learning, that is, learning by doing.

As the open enrollment period — Feb. 15 through March 11 — nears, there has been a buzz about the school. “We’ve definite been getting inquiries,” Bandstra said. Enrollment is capped at 135 students for the 2016-17 school year, with spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis through March 11.

Working with the Districts

Bandstra has been communicating with the local school districts within the West Shore Educational Service District so there is a good understanding about what the academy is and to discuss how students are recommended for G2S.

There will be a memorandum of understanding between G2S and each district, which Bandstra is working now to develop.

They will be similar among the districts, with some distinctions. For instance, Mason County Central might provide food service, so that information would be included in the memo.

There will be a recommendation process in which the districts’ personnel identify students who might benefit from the unique experience at G2S. “It’s not a referral, but it’s us working together as partners,” Bandstra said.
