Gateway to Success Academy is Born
Today was the official Press Conference to announce Gateway to Success Academy (G2S).
We are a new charter school being proposed with the endorsement of all school districts in Mason, Oceana and Lake County. While we are still in the planning stages, G2S is the recommendation from the West Michigan Educational Leadership Group as an alternative education school that will serve all of the school districts of West Shore Educational Serivce Districts.
Here is what Mason County Central Superintendent, Jeff Mount, says about altenative education locally. “Mason County Central has been in the alternative education system for over 30 years,” Mount said. “We started with Dunes. Then an opportunity came to collaborate with Ludington, which had a program known as Connections. That morphed into Journey and focused on providing educational needs to an underserved population of students. In the meantime, Oceana High, the alternative program in Oceana County, dissolved leaving a population of students to go find their own way. There are services, to a certain extent, in a program in northern Muskegon County.”
The West Michigan Educational Leadership Group was tasked to investigate and find the best method to provide an alternative educational program, one that could serve the current Journey students and districts, but also extend into Oceana and Lake County to provide opportunity to the underserved students in those counties as well. A charter school, which will be a new public school, with its own district, was the best approach. Gateway to Success Academy is the solution. G2S will serve as a replacement for Journey that allows the programing to be expanded and provides additional resources to teach the underserved and struugling students in our area. Being in a seperate district, G2S will have the flexibility to cater the teaching methods to those students.
